Stuart's TI-99/4A - Internet Web Browser Solid State Cartridge V9.2
Product Details

This is a web browser for the TI-99/4A, where the TI-99 is connected to the Internet through a serial port and a Lantronix UDS-10 serial-to-Ethernet adaptor. The browser will not work with any 'modern' web pages - there are just too many HTML tags and other stuff for the TI to handle, and there's no way you could display much of it anyway with the TI's low resolution screen. Instead, the browser works with a bespoke set of tags which are matched to the display capabilities of the TI-99.

Main Features

  • Disk and cartridge versions available (both versions have exactly the same functionality).
  • Supports serial ports on a NanoPEB or TI PEB RS-232 card.
    • (The browser interfaces with the TMS9902 serial chip directly, so it will only work with the NanoPEB v1. It *won't* work with the NanoPEB v2 with the 16550.)
  • Web page text displayed on a 42 character by 22 row screen, with an address bar across the top of the screen and a status bar across the bottom.
  • Coloured and underlined text supported.
  • Text hyperlinks supported.
  • Sprite pointer for selecting links on the page. The pointer can be moved using the keyboard or a joystick.
  • Displayed page can be scrolled up and down.
  • Character set of 256 characters supported. Characters 0 - 127 are predefined as the normal ASCII character set, table drawing characters and various control characters. Any character can be redefined.
  • Ability to display 8-pixel wide graphic characters at any position on screen, with full TMS 9918A colour support (2 colours per 8-pixel row) (this makes it easy to display colour graphics).
  • Rectangular hyperlink areas can be defined in terms of pixels relative to the top left of the screen (so hyperlink areas can be defined over graphics as well as text). When a link is clicked, the pointer position is appended to the link URL for further processing if required by a script on the linked page.
  • Maximum size of web page is 12,000 bytes.
  • Supports a favourites list stored on disk. The list can be edited by the user using the Editor/Assembler Editor.
  • 5-entry URL history list. History is per-session only.
  • Caches the IP address of the last 4 web servers accessed (so no need to look up the server IP address for every page accessed on the same site). Caching is per-session only.
  • Ability to display the page source code (rather than the rendered page).
